The internationally trained actor appears in the fantasy romance miniseries Lucifer: My Boyfriend From Hell, stepping into the role of Victor, a ruthless investor whose ruthless tactics place him directly in the path of Lucifer himself.
While the project may differ dramatically from the psychological and action-driven films that have helped establish Mailu’s reputation, it reflects something that has become central to his career, an eagerness to evolve alongside an industry that never stands still.
A Journey Built Across Continents
Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, Mailu’s first language was Kikamba, the language of his Kamba heritage. He also grew up speaking Swahili and English, developing an appreciation for storytelling long before acting became a profession.
“My roots and heritage from Kenya, as well as my upbringing around the world, bring a unique, multifaceted approach when it comes to making artistic choices,” Mailu explains. “They help enhance the perspective of every character I portray and allow audiences to experience stories from a fresh point of view.”
That perspective has been shaped by more than geography. After discovering acting through stage productions during high school, Mailu left Kenya to pursue greater opportunities, spending nine years living and performing in the United Kingdom before relocating to Los Angeles to continue his training. His studies at the New York Film Academy and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts culminated in receiving the prestigious Charles Jehlinger Award for Excellence in Acting, recognition reserved for performers demonstrating exceptional artistic achievement and dedication to their craft.

Playing a villain proved to be one of the production’s greatest attractions.
“It was great stepping into a villainous character and experiencing the world of vertical micro dramas,” Mailu says. “Seeing their soapy appeal and understanding why they’ve become so accessible to audiences around the world was fascinating.”
Learning a Different Rhythm
Although Mailu has appeared in feature films, shorts, and television, vertical storytelling introduced an entirely different set of creative demands. Unlike traditional productions, where actors often have more time to explore scenes, vertical dramas operate at remarkable speed. Multiple episodes are frequently completed within a single day, requiring performers to memorize large amounts of dialogue while maintaining emotional continuity throughout rapidly changing scenes.
“The biggest challenge was adapting to the melodramatic, fast-paced acting style of the platform while still making sure every emotional beat landed,” Mailu explains. “You have to stay incredibly focused because several episodes can be filmed in one day. Memorizing lines quickly becomes essential if you want to keep the production moving.”
For Mailu, the experience became another opportunity to expand his skill set, proving that strong acting is ultimately about adapting to the needs of the story, regardless of format.
A Changing Industry
The success of vertical platforms reflects an entertainment landscape that continues to evolve, reaching millions of viewers through mobile-first storytelling. Rather than viewing the format as separate from traditional film and television, Mailu sees it as another avenue for connecting with audiences. His willingness to embrace emerging platforms mirrors the broader philosophy that has guided his career since leaving Nairobi: remain curious, continue learning, and never stop growing as an artist. That outlook has already taken him from Kenya to London and eventually Hollywood, where his résumé continues to expand across genres as diverse as historical drama, horror, action, fantasy, and romance.

As an international actor working in Hollywood, Mailu believes every project carries an opportunity to broaden perspectives.
“My work contributes to greater inclusivity because I’m part of stories that showcase the African diaspora in a positive light,” he says. “It helps bridge the collaborative gap between Hollywood and Africa while building greater cultural understanding through storytelling.”
It is a philosophy inspired in part by one of Hollywood’s greatest trailblazers.
“If I could go back to the Golden Age of Hollywood,” Mailu says, “the actor I’d most identify with would be Sidney Poitier. Like him, I hope to bring a different cultural perspective into the craft that can influence and shape stories for future generations.”
