For Luke Arnold, the release of Essentials Vol. 2 isn’t simply another book launch. It’s the latest piece of a career that has steadily expanded beyond acting into something much broader: creating original worlds that can live across novels, graphic fiction, and television.
While audiences first came to know Arnold through memorable performances as John Silver in Black Sails and Michael Hutchence in INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, the Australian actor says storytelling has always been the constant, regardless of the medium.
“Storyteller is probably the closest description,” Arnold says. “Whether you’re acting, writing, or collaborating on a larger project, the goal is the same, serving the story in the best way possible.”
That philosophy is on full display in Essentials Vol. 2, the newest installment of the science-fiction graphic novel series Arnold co-created with Chris “Doc” Wyatt. Picking up after the reality-altering events of the first volume, the sequel broadens its surreal mythology while placing greater emphasis on its characters, blending ambitious world-building with emotionally grounded storytelling.
The project represents another significant milestone in Arnold’s increasingly diverse creative career. Alongside his work on screen, he has become an accomplished novelist through The Fetch Phillips Archives, a fantasy-noir series praised for its inventive setting, sharp dialogue, and memorable characters. Rather than viewing acting and writing as separate pursuits, Arnold sees them as different expressions of the same creative instinct.
That perspective has been shaped by years spent observing every stage of production. Throughout projects including Peter Pan, Broken Hill, and Black Sails, Arnold sought opportunities to learn beyond his role as an actor, gaining firsthand experience with editing, post-production, and the collaborative process that brings stories to life.
“I’ve been lucky to work with people who invited me behind the curtain,” he says. “It taught me how all the different creative pieces fit together and how much every contributor shapes the final story.”
Those experiences continue to influence how he approaches every project, whether he’s inhabiting a character on screen or creating one on the page. His understanding of collaboration has become a defining characteristic of his work, allowing him to move comfortably between performance and authorship while maintaining a consistent creative voice.
Today, Arnold occupies a unique position in entertainment. Even as he stars as investigative journalist Martin Scarsden in AMC’s Scrublands, he’s continuing to develop original stories through novels and graphic fiction, building a body of work that reflects his interests rather than the expectations typically placed on actors.
For Arnold, success has never been measured by the medium itself but by the impact of the finished story.
“I just hope the people I work with, and the people who read or watch what I make, feel that I made the project better by being part of it,” he says. “If I can do that, I’m happy.”
With Essentials Vol. 2, Arnold continues to demonstrate that his creative ambitions extend far beyond the screen. His career increasingly reflects an artist interested not just in portraying compelling characters, but in imagining the worlds they inhabit, and inviting audiences to explore them alongside him.
